Insurance has always been a people business.

Every policy represents a family, a business, or a community looking for protection and peace of mind. Behind every transaction is a customer who relies on their broker to provide trusted advice while making every interaction as simple, seamless and efficient as possible.

As those expectations continue to evolve, our industry has both an opportunity and a responsibility to keep pace with customer needs.

Canadians continue to place their trust in insurance brokers because they value professional advice, personalized recommendations, and support when they need to make a claim. That fundamental value proposition hasn’t changed.

What has changed is how customers expect that service to be delivered – faster, simpler and more connected.

Those expectations are reshaping every industry, and insurance is no exception.

For brokers, that means finding better ways to support clients by writing business more efficiently, strengthening relationships, and delivering the trusted advice and service customers expect. For insurers, it means making it easier for brokers to do business by providing faster, simpler, and more connected ways to exchange information. For all of us, it means ensuring technology removes friction, increases productivity, reduces costs, and delivers a better customer experience.

A Common Language

The good news is that we’ve already built much of that foundation.

Our industry has worked together to create shared data standards – a common language that allows information to move reliably between brokers, insurers and technology providers. Data standards quietly power millions of transactions every year. You don’t need to understand how those standards work to appreciate what they make possible. When information flows more easily, brokers spend less time on administration, insurers receive more complete and consistent information, and customers benefit from a faster, simpler, more streamlined experience.

While faster systems and fewer steps matter, the real value of technology is measured by the time it gives brokers back to strengthen client relationships, provide trusted advice, and help customers make informed decisions.

Consider a homeowner who purchased a policy ten years ago. Since then, they may have renovated their kitchen, finished their basement, or built an addition. Those improvements may have significantly increased the value of their home. Rising rebuilding costs and inflation have added another layer of complexity. Yet unless someone asks the right questions, their coverage may no longer be adequate. Technology cannot have that conversation. A broker can.

That’s exactly where technology creates its greatest value. Not by replacing expertise, but by creating more opportunities to put it to work.

From Common Standards to Real-Time Connections

Data standards have given our industry a common language. The next evolution is giving that language the ability to move instantly and securely between brokers and insurers. That’s the opportunity the proposed industry API Gateway represents – creating a more connected, efficient and responsive broker distribution channel.

By enabling secure, real-time connectivity between broker management systems and insurer systems, the proposed API Gateway removes friction from routine transactions, giving brokers more time to focus on the conversations where advice matters most. Instead of navigating multiple insurer portals or re-entering the same information into multiple systems, brokers can focus on delivering the trusted advice and advocacy customers value.

For insurers, the benefits are equally compelling. Receiving standardized information in real time reduces manual intervention, improves straight-through processing, accelerates response times, and creates greater operational efficiency. Growth is another important outcome.
